2020 Rose Hill Elementary School Science Fair

Thursday, March 5th

In further efforts to follow the district health protocols the EVENING science fair event on March 5th has been CANCELLED. Students have put in great effort into their projects thus far, and we are discussing how to modify the awards piece of the Science Fair in light of the changes to the schedule. 

Thursday, March 5th, 2019 is the Rose Hill Elementary Science Fair. All students are eligible to participate! 4th and 5th graders are required to participate. Please choose a fun, safe and not-too-messy experiment to do.

4th and 5th graders will register in their classes.

K-3rd graders register via the Eventbrite site by Monday, March 2.

Project requirements and rules:

  1. All projects must be durable and safe.
  2. If your project includes water or liquids, you MUST BRING YOUR OWN PAPER TOWELS and a tray to catch the liquids. Really messy projects are discouraged.
  3. Running water, drainage, gas, or compressed air will not be provided.
  4. Electrical power is very limited and cannot be guaranteed.  Available power will be on a first come first serve basis (get the entry form in early).
  5. Live animals, dangerous chemicals, open flames, projectiles and explosives may not be used.
  6. Any project that is deemed unsafe or inhumane will not be displayed, this will be determined by the Science Fair committee.
  7. Each project must be displayed with a summary of their research and project.
  8. Projects must be the work of the individual students.  Adult support is encouraged; however the project should clearly reflect the students' own efforts.


  • Participants will set up their science projects, in the gym after lunch the day of the fair.
  • All students will be responsible for removing their displays, as well as leaving their area neat and clean between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. after the fair.
  • Display boards are available in the office. You are allowed to use your own board, but it may not exceed the following dimensions: 36" wide by 36" high by 24" deep.
  • Participants should generally provide all of their own materials, but some assistance is available.

Science Fair projects will be judged on how well the project followed the scientific method. Students should follow the basic steps of scientific discovery to prepare for the Science Fair.

  1. Ask a Question
  2. Make a Prediction (I think that...)
  3. Make a plan to measure and follow it
  4. Make observations
  5. Record the results
  6. Draw a conclusion

When the science is done:

  1. Put together the display board
  2. Practice the presentation

Guidance for 4th and 5th Grade Students
4th and 5th graders will be working on their projects with their classes and the support of their teacher. Projects from the 4th and 5th graders are expected to follow the inquiry method that is taught in class. The projects will be evaluated using the the 4th and 5th grade evaluation form.

Guidance for Kindergarten through 3rd Grade Students
The science fair is an opportunity for our youngest children to learn about the process of scientific inquiry and can help prepare them for more rigorous expectations of 4th and 5th grade projects. The projects will be evaluated using the Kindergarten to 3rd grade evaluation form. Projects should focus on answering a question, rather than a demonstration. For example, an exploding volcano is interesting, but a question should be answered in the process. Instead the question may be whether baking soda or baking powder is better at making the volcano explode.
